Rating:⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐-(5/5)
A sentence that struck me at the onset of this book was; God can turn a mess into a message. Few words, yet they hold the deepest of meanings.
One of my favorite poems in this journal was Spontaneous Combustion. This poem transformed a blow job scenario, which should be very sexual, into a story with lessons. As a man, when you thrust into a woman’s mouth, you give her so much power and advantage. At that moment, you place your life and future in her hands.
In the poem, Only in Monroe, the author recounts the ills occurring in life using Monroe and Louisiana as case studies. The evils we act blind to in our surroundings are explicitly distinguished. Nonetheless, in due time these wrongs would be made right, leading to a new beginning.
Lord Help Me, the poem comes from a place of great pain, but there's still so much love to give. Nicole talks to God about the wrong choices of her lover, the hurt, and the pain he caused. Rather than curse, she requests God’s mercy and direction for her lover. She desires a new life for him, one that is in Christ.
I don't look like what I've been through is one of the very relatable poems in this journal. Many people suffer unimaginable pain yet go around their daily activities putting on a show. Many do not have a shoulder to lean on, a comforter, or a reliable friend to share in their misfortune. A plethora of days could be sad and blue. Regardless, God comes through for us all.
The poem that ended this journal was perfect. The poem proportions a man finding a good wife to the sincere love Christ had for the church. The author opens the reader's eye to the blessings of living right. I am a living witness to those blessings, so this was very relatable.
Similarly, I liked that the author used real-life events to communicate her message in these poems. This act made for easy comprehension of the author’s standpoints.
Frankly, this poetry journal is from a Christian standpoint. However, the average Christian may not be comfortable with the choice of language used because Nicole’s words are raw and unfiltered. Nevertheless, there are vital lessons to learn and take home for ourselves. The Diminishing of Slime is a godly sanctification of drama conveyed to many nations, stating that God can turn havoc into a blessing.
Ultimately, I encountered no editing or spelling errors, meaning the book was professionally well-edited. I am rating this poetry journal 5 out of 5 stars. It was worth every minute of my time.
