Book Review of Many More School Days, Holidays, and All Days That Lie Between by Nicole Brown

Rating:⭐⭐⭐-(3/5)

Recently published is the poetry journal: Many More School Days, Holidays, and All Days That Lie Between by Nicole Brown. In this journal, she imposes the importance of social studies in a student’s life. She wants the readers to do their part in ensuring that students obtain knowledge, knowledge to not only pass a high-stakes assessment but to enhance learning opportunities.

The book is a compilation of habits stated somewhat poetically. While considering the author’s intent of the book, I must say the poem used for the introduction is very fitting. The poem “Leader in Me” evokes strong meaning in every letter.

Furthermore, the author throws a clarion call for us to prioritize our thoughts and actions, to seek to understand before reaching to be understood. Listen before speaking. She hammers on the importance of teamwork. To her, when we synergize, leadership is energized. There are no wiser words than this.

Going into the overall diction used, I must commend the author. The language used is not verbose. Instead, it was straightforward. This poetry journal does not require the aid of an interpreter to understand the points stated due to its lack of specific poetic devices.

Poetry has different styles in which they come in. However, the language didn’t entirely fit the attitude of a poet. The use of poetic devices was not so evident, if not absent. Even though the author had valid points, the lack of enticing use of simile, irony, or metaphor - elements that take a mere book to a level of fine poetry led to poor communication of ideas.

Unfortunately, the sudden turn of events to political aspects and patriotism left me conflicted. Likewise, the positive writer script paragraph felt like a kid’s section. Shortly she taps into the math and science section, which houses complex diction and instances which I believe could only be understood by grown-ups. I must ask, “WHO EXACTLY IS THE AUTHOR TRYING TO ENGAGE OR SELL HER IDEAS TO”?

Nevertheless, I appreciate the author’s versatility in the book. Many themes were touched. Science, arts, politics, and whatnot were all included. However, a lot of rearrangements need to occur to enhance reading flow. From a reader’s eye, I advise narrowing the book to a specific age grade and a few themes. Doing this would help the intended audience appreciate the book better. For the stated reasons, I am rating this book a 3 out of 5 stars.
